Before the coming of Green Revolution India was dependent on import of food grains to feed its citizens. These imports particularly use to be from US. This was a big blackmailing factor in US hands which that time was friendlier with Pakistan.
This dependence on West for food grains was a big hurdle for India to excercise it's foreign policy independently. The then PM discussed the matter with a group of Indian scientists, Dr. Swaminathan(Father of Green Revolution) being one of them.
Dr. Swaminathan & his team were entrusted with the job to research & by any means increase the food grain production. Dr. Swaminathan started his research from Punjab, which at that time was the foremost producer of wheat.
The scientists found out that there was nothing wrong with the seed & soil but the stem of the wheat plant was too long hence when it bore fruit and strong winds blew. It would break from middle due to the weight of the grains at top. Thereby reducing the produce almost by 60%. The group of scientists worked day & night to solve the problem and Within just few months they were able to develop a new plant that had a shorter and a stronger stem. The new modified seeds were secretly under the pretext of govt. subsidy distributed free of cost to the farmers of Punjab. Who knew nothing about the modification in seed genetics and used them.
Gradually the food grain production in India started to rise however to keep it a secret import of food grains was not totally stopped by India. Than came the East Pakistan issue & as usual Pakistan ran to its that time great friend US urging it to do something saying India was trying to break Pakistan.
US unaware of the rise in food grain production in India assured Pakistan that if India tried any misadventure in East Pakistan They would stop export of food grains to India forcing it to retreat. However because of the Green Revolution, particularly in Punjab, To the shock of US we not only fed our people but also millions of Bangladesh refugees in 1971. It was too late until the US realised arm twisting India by stopping export of wheat 🌾 is not going to work anymore.
Embarrassed & ashamed both US and UK sent their nuclear ships towards India to aid Pakistan by attacking India in 1971 war only to realise Soviet Nuclear submarines were already guarding the Bay of Bengal. USSR plainly declared that any attack on India will be considered an attack on USSR. US,UK fearing the Russians had to retreat leaving their friend Pakistan to fend for itself.
US couldn't digest this defeat and held a secret enquiry as to from where India got food grains that it's blackmail didn't work. That's when they found out about the Green Revolution in Punjab.
Pakistan battered, shattered & cut into 2 halves in the 1971 war again rushed to its friend US with a proposal that a Khalistan type Movement be funded and initiated in Punjab and like Bangladesh if Punjab was seperated from India. It would again become dependent on import of food grains from US.
Cold war that time was at its peak and US too was eager to be one up on USSR. They were embarrassed greatly by the outcome of 1971 war in which their dear friend Pakistan was not only defeated but cut into two & forced to sign a agreement called Simla Agreement stating that all issues between India and Pakistan will be bilateral & UN or any other country cannot interfere between them . They accepted Pakistanis proposal & in the name of Khalistan Movement CIA plus ISI sowed the seeds of separation in the minds of Sikhs. Food grains, Green Revolution, US revenge & Fertile lands were the actual reason for Khalistan Movement in Punjab.
Irony was most of the Khalistan Supporters also did know about the actual agenda of Pakistan and US.
